Gard

Interaction / Information Design

Grown out of a deep interest in plants, sustainability and technology, the open-source project "Gard" was born, a semester work developed by two media design students from Germany — with the aim of making hydroponics accessible to everyone.

"The City of Tomorrow" — this was the theme announced at the beginning of our semester at campus Münchberg. After several brainstorming sessions, research phases and a final pitch, we ultimately came up with the topic of hydroponics.

Extreme weather conditions, sealed urban surfaces, rising numbers of mental illnesses, and more and more people needing to be fed — these are just a few of many problems our urban areas are facing today. Hydroponic systems are a suitable answer to many of these current problems.

With Gard, we want to bring urban gardening into your home by taking a fun and affordable open source approach. We offer a detailed blueprint that allows anyone to build their own hydroponic system for their home. We also give the possibility to introduce data with the help of sensors and a web app developed by us, which will give our users a detailed real-time overview regarding the development of their growing plants.
